2xIntro: On the road with Patti Smith by Michael Stipe

Whilst I was in LA at Ray Gun magazine, Marvin Scott Jarrett introduced me to Michael Stipe (REM) who had been on the road with his idol Patti Smith.

Whilst she was touring he’d documented the experience with his Leica, and asked if I would help him design a book capturing the journey. I travelled to Athens/Georgia, spending a week on his farm and paginating the imagery on his kitchen table, then put the book together using a lot of hand made type layouts back at Ray Gun HQ. With additional copy by William Burroughs and Alan Ginsberg.
